PON - PON - PATA - PON...
What the heck is that??? With those PATA, PON, DON and CHAKA.... It's a new game called PATAPON, launched by Sony for PSP handheld console. It has caught my attention with all those cute lil' eyeballs that fight monsters. It's a game mixes RPG-style army development with RTS tactics and a rhythm-based control scheme.
Patapon's premise is simple enough. Players step in as the god of the Patapon, a race of creatures which are best described as walking, talking eyeballs. At some point in their past the Patapon were defeated by the evil Zigotons, a race of walking, talking square buttons (of Sony face button fame). It's up to the player to rebuild the Patapon nation, fending off continued Zigoton incursions while leading the way to Earthend where the fabled "IT" awaits. Whatever "IT" is.
This rhythm-meets-RPG-meets-RTS play style won't be for everybody, but it's surprisingly addictive once you get the hang of it. Anyone who plays Patapon definitely will walk away with that infectious "Pata-Pata-Pata-Pon" beat stuck in their head.
